While these days Omaha is a large city with half a million people who call it home, it’s also known for its pioneer history as a stop on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail in the early 1800s.

The Omaha of today offers residents vibrant city life and a robust job market. In fact, this Nebraska city is home to several Fortune 500 companies, including Berkshire Hathaway and Union Pacific, and is known as a start-up friendly city with some people calling Omaha “the Silicon Prairie” and likening it to the tech-hungry Silicon Valley in California.

Omaha doesn’t lack in entertainment (see the annual MAHA Music Festival), education (with nearby University of Nebraska Omaha), or health care (with more than seven area hospitals, including children’s facilities and specialty services). Overall, if you’re after big-city advantages without giving up the close-knit community vibe of a smaller town, Omaha is a lovely place to settle down.—AS
