Less than an hour away from New York City, the town of Greenburgh, nestled in the Hudson Valley, offers residents all the perks of proximity to a major metro—with enough distance between to deliver small-town charm in a leafy landscape of rolling hills.
Greenburgh encompasses six smaller villages—Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, and Tarrytown—as well as more rural unincorporated areas that each have their own history, flavor, and attractions. Beautiful outdoor spaces and historic mansions are numerous throughout.
In Tarrytown, for instance, locals can tour the stunning gothic revival-style Lyndhurst Mansion, designated a national historic landmark; visit the home of America’s first internationally famous author, Washington Irving; or get away from it all by hiking, biking, and kayaking in the 72-acre Tarrytown Lakes Park. Irvington is home to a national landmark and unique architectural gem of its own: the Armour-Stiner Octagon House—the only known fully domed octagonal residence. In Elmsford, locals can sip craft beer and spirits made in the village at Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. or at Current Spirits. And the Greenburgh Nature Center hosts a holiday market and train show each year to entertain families.
Greenburgh offers fantastic public school options. While the area is served by a number of different districts, GreatSchools found that 69% of schools Greenburgh residents attend achieve above-average ratings, and 93% of students here go on to graduate from high school.—KR
