Just across the Red River from its larger sister city of Shreveport, Bossier City provides residents with plenty of activities to keep them busy well into the evening. And the area’s entertainments aren’t geared toward grownups alone; there’s a slew of child-friendly amusements and good schools nearby to keep families happy, too.

Bossier City’s four casinos and Hurricane Alley in its East Bank District provide locals with places to gamble, dine out, and listen to live music, while craft beer enthusiasts can sample pints from four nearby breweries. Together, Bossier City and Shreveport feature more than 65 festivals and events each year. Like any good spot in the region, the biggest event is Mardi Gras season—comprising multiple parades. In spring, the area hosts Mudbug Madness, one of the state’s biggest crawfish fests, while fall brings artists to the Red River Revel Arts Festival.

Bossier City kids will find plenty of ways to spend their weekend, too: At Sci-Port Discovery Center, they can explore the cosmos via interactive exhibits or the state’s only IMAX dome; learn about marine life at Shreveport Aquarium; or zip-line over a gator-filled swamp at Gators & Friends Adventure Park. And just 28 miles south lies Chimp Haven, a 200-acre sanctuary where more than 300 chimpanzees enjoy retirement from their past lives in biomedical research.—KR
