Appointed by President Lula of Brazil in January 2023, Tarciana Paula Gomes Medeiros is the first woman to lead Banco do Brasil in its more than 200-year history. A 26-year company veteran who rose through retail and agribusiness banking, she has called 2025 the most challenging year of her career. It involved steering Banco do Brasil through a surge in agribusiness loan delinquency that contributed to full-year adjusted net profit tumbling 45.4% to R$20.6 billion. However, the bank began to recover by year-end: Fourth-quarter adjusted net profit rose 51.7% from the previous quarter to R$5.7 billion, beating analyst expectations by more than 26%. Based on the guidance announced by the bank for 2026, Medeiros is expected to deliver cumulative results of R$118 billion over four years as CEO—an amount equivalent to the total results recorded in the seven years prior to her appointment as chief executive. Medeiros’s leadership style is pragmatic and steady, pairing deep operational experience with a push to modernize the bank, including the development of more than 700 AI models that are now in use across the institution.
