Meredith Kopit Levien became CEO of the New York Times in 2020, taking the helm of the iconic institution amid a global pandemic, economic upheaval, and political unrest. Kopit Levien came to the company in 2013 and was an architect of the Times’ digital transformation, helping scale its subscription-first model to more than 11.5 million subscribers across news, games, and cooking, the Athletic, and Wirecutter. Under her leadership, the Times has built a diversified media bundle—and a bulwark against rising mistrust and misinformation. In 2024, the company posted $2.6 billion in revenue, up 6.6% from 2023, with the majority coming from digital products and subscriptions. A vocal advocate for the role of independent journalism in the AI age, Levien has stressed that while AI may change how news is delivered, it can’t replace the human judgment, standards, and reporting that underpin it.
