Corie Barry started at electronics retailer Best Buy in 1999 and climbed the ranks to CFO before being named CEO in June 2019. There has hardly been a dull moment since. On top of a post-pandemic lull in electronics shopping and then inflation that has spurred many shoppers to reconsider making big purchases, Barry now has to contend with the constant, ever-in-flux threat of tariffs, to which Best Buy is very exposed. To help diversify, Best Buy has under Barry launched a marketplace and is looking to beef up its ads business. What’s more, Barry has said the industry is “in the guts of a replacement-and-upgrade cycle where people really need this stuff.” Best Buy had a better-than-expected holiday season, when it saw modest growth. The retailer is in a good position to accelerate its return to form, if tariffs don’t get in the way.
