As president and CEO of Swedish state-owned Vattenfall, Anna Borg leads one of the largest European energy companies with 21,000 employees across the continent. She’s a proven commodity, having spent virtually her entire career at the century-old company with the sole exception of a brief stint at the Swedish buy-now, pay-later firm Klarna. The native Swede is convinced sustainability and profitability cannot be mutually exclusive since “climate change does not negotiate with anyone.” In order to inspire others to play an active role in the green transition, Vattenfall is now partnering with Swedish industry to double fossil-free electricity production in the coming decades. Her company has now committed to invest some $17 billion over the next five years in projects like offshore wind farms in the North Sea. Vattenfall aims to reach net-zero across its entire emissions chain by 2040.
