Appointed CEO in 2022, Sarah London was previously Centene’s vice chairman. Prior to Centene, she held various roles at Optum, a part of UnitedHealth Group. In the lucrative Medicare Advantage market, London has focused Centene on plans for lower-income, "medically complex" individuals, a group that she noted to Fortune last year is “sadly” bound to grow. “Seniors are getting sicker and poorer and so really figuring out how to catch and care for that population, I think is a huge growth opportunity,” she explained. The strategy seems to be paying off, as a slew of state governments have selected Centene for contracts. Centene reported $2.7 billion in profit and $154 billion in revenue for 2023, both improvements over the previous year. In the second quarter of 2024, revenue exceeded analyst estimates by 8.5%, while earnings per share surpassed estimates by 15%. In May 2024 at Fortune’s Brainstorm Health conference, London announced plans to help build nearly $1 billion worth of affordable housing in low-income communities in eight states. She made the case that health care is only one factor in health outcomes; safe and stable housing also plays a major role. In April 2024, the company donated its Ferguson, Mo., claims center building to the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis for its programs including workforce development, housing, food distribution, and early-childhood education.
