Gail Boudreaux was appointed president and CEO of Elevance Health in 2017 after six years as CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a division of UnitedHealth Group, and executive roles at Health Care Service Corp. and Aetna. Elevance’s 2023 operating revenue of $170 billion was up 9.3% from the previous year, despite a Medicaid redetermination process that caused some customers to lose eligibility for services. In 2024 the expansion and diversification that Boudreaux has led, beyond insurance and into health care services, seems to be paying off: Even as Elevance saw continued attrition in Medicaid membership, the company’s second-quarter profits surpassed $2.3 billion, thanks to higher premium yields and growth in its subsidiary Carelon’s health care services. Boudreaux succeeded Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella as chair of the Business Council in February 2023. Boudreaux is the first woman to chair the Business Council, an organization of chief executives leading major businesses, in the group’s nearly 90-year history. In a keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2024, Boudreaux discussed Elevance’s use of generative AI to simplify and personalize the consumer health care experience.
