Dr. Fei-Fei Li earned the nickname “godmother” of AI after inventing ImageNet, a large image database for training and testing models to visually detect and classify objects. Dr. Li’s startup World Labs is building “large world models,” which can interact with the three-dimensional world. It raised $230 million in initial funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, New Enterprise Associates, and Radical Ventures. While on temporary leave from her professorship in Stanford’s computer science department, Dr. Li continues to oversee the school’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. She was previously a vice president at Google and chief AI and machine learning scientist at Google Cloud. Dr. Li has advised government efforts to regulate technology for the White House and the National Science Foundation. Earlier this year, she warned in an op-ed for Fortune that a California AI safety bill, SB-1047, would “harm our budding AI ecosystem” if passed. (Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed the bill in late September.)
