Ana Botín has held the executive chairman position at Banco Santander since 2014, and is the fourth member of her family to lead the Spanish bank. In addition to continuing her family’s legacy there, she sits on the board of Coca-Cola and the advisory board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In her second decade at the helm, she has ambitious plans to expand the bank’s presence in the U.S., starting with its digital consumer offerings. Negative interest rates set by the European Central Bank have been a challenge for the banking giant, and its stock is down around 35% since Botín took over. But the company experienced a record $12 billion net profit for 2023, up 15% from 2022.
