Earlier this year, Hobson was elevated to co-CEO of Ariel, where she has spent her entire career. She helped quadruple the firm’s assets under management from post-crisis lows to a current total of $13 billion. But Hobson’s influence goes well beyond Ariel to her powerful board seats, where she brings much more than her financial acumen. The longtime voice on social issues like financial literacy and racial inequality, Hobson featured in JPMorgan Chase’s annual letter alongside CEO Jamie Dimon, detailing programs designed to lift up disadvantaged black communities. After Starbucks was criticized for alleged racial bias, Hobson—who is a director—was a key part of the ensuing diversity training. She was named the board’s vice chair shortly after.
