Morgan Stanley’s China CEO has become one of the most influential Asian women in global finance over the course of her decades-long career. After a record 2020 for the investment bank’s Asia Pacific business, co-CEO Christianson has seen revenues grow 26% in the first half of 2021. And as sole China CEO—a post she has held since 2006—Christianson has helped Morgan Stanley expand in a highly-regulated market, despite the ongoing tensions in the U.S.-China relationship. After the Chinese government allowed Morgan Stanley to take control of its local securities joint venture last year, the bank this year filed to increase its stake to 90%. In late September, Christianson announced that she would retire at the end of 2021, although she will continue advising Morgan Stanley about China as an advisory director.
