Mike Wirth, the chairman and CEO of Chevron, assumed the CEO role in 2018 after first joining the energy giant as a design engineer in 1982 when he was fresh out of college. Chevron has proved to be an investor darling in recent years, rising to No. 2 among the Big Oil majors in market cap and net profits, behind only Texas rival Exxon Mobil. Chevron, however, just won its arbitration fight against Exxon Mobil, allowing Chevron to finally close on its prized $53 billion acquisition of Hess. While Chevron continues to grow its oil and gas business from West Texas to Kazakhstan, the company is investing more in hydrogen, renewable fuels and sustainable aviation fuel, carbon capture, and, most recently, lithium extraction. Wirth recently completed Chevron’s move from its California roots to its new Houston headquarters. Before taking over as CEO, he served in executive vice president roles in the midstream, refining, and chemicals businesses.
