Mark Zuckerberg has a knack for reinvention. The Meta CEO has shed the geeky sunscreen and Caesar cut in favor of designer threads and a gold chain. Just as remarkable is the business makeover Zuck orchestrated, establishing Meta as one of the leaders in the booming generative-AI field after the company was initially caught flat-footed by the rise of ChatGPT. In an extraordinary buying spree this year, Zuckerberg has assembled a team of the top AI entrepreneurs and scientists and vowed to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on the infrastructure to create AI “superintelligence.” While Meta continues to face criticism for the societal ills associated with social media, the company has managed to win over investors with the steady growth in its revenue (expected to total nearly $190 billion this year) and its discipline keeping costs in check.
