After leaving senior roles at OpenAI over concerns its Microsoft partnership would compromise AI safety, siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei launched Anthropic in 2021. But building frontier models is expensive, and Anthropic has had to make its own funding deals—raising $8 billion from Amazon, $2 billion from Google, and another $3.5 billion in a March 2025 Series E led by Lightspeed, which valued the company at $61.5 billion. Claude, Anthropic’s chatbot, has become a serious rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT—reportedly reaching $4 billion in annualized revenue in July 2025. Much of that growth is driven by enterprise demand, especially for Claude’s strengths in code generation.
