Charles Scharf, 60, is credited with turning around the scandal-plagued Wells Fargo. Since arriving in 2019, Scharf, the former CEO of Bank of New York Mellon and ex-head of Visa, strategically cut underperforming units and reduced discretionary spending at Wells Fargo. He also slashed thousands of jobs, and the tactics proved effective. These tactics proved effective. In June, the Federal Reserve lifted a $1.95 trillion asset cap limit on Wells, which it had imposed in 2018 as punishment for past misconduct. With the stock on the upswing, Wells Fargo’s board late last year awarded Scharf a $31.2 million compensation package for his efforts.
