Four years after taking over from Jeff Bezos as CEO, Andy Jassy appears to have transformed Amazon into his own. Jassy’s Amazon has reduced the cost to serve shopping customers even while increasing delivery speeds. It continues to boost the company’s video offerings and its $60 billion advertising business with movie and sports licensing deals, like the NBA pact that kicks in this fall. And Jassy is spending heavily on giant AI bets from AWS to Alexa+ to Amazon.com’s own shopping assistant Rufus. Sprinkle in a still-controversial five-day return-to-office requirement—and a thinly veiled warning to employees that those who don’t experiment with AI may be at risk of exiting—and this finally feels like Jassy’s own version of Amazon.
