The world's largest asset manager was among a slew of firms to launch a Bitcoin ETF in 2024, and the product has been a major success, growing to become one of the 50 largest ETFs globally. The ETF holds nearly 4% of all Bitcoin in existence. BlackRock also offers an Ethereum ETF—which is also the largest such fund—although it has drawn less investment than its Bitcoin fund.

BlackRock's CEO, Larry Fink, has also championed crypto in the press, arguing in a television appearance that all assets will be tokenized, or put in blockchain wrappers. The asset manager has also partnered with crypto firm Securitize to issue BUIDL, which is a money market fund that trades on decentralized ledgers.
