In a category that heavily weighted developer activity and the total value of currency locked in a blockchain, the Ethereum Foundation was the easy winner. After periods of turmoil following the launch of Ethereum in 2014, both the foundation and its eponymous blockchain have come to embody the best of what decentralized crypto can be.
Ethereum is not the most valuable crypto—the so-called “flippening” with Bitcoin long predicted has never materialized—but it’s the most versatile and the most popular. This is because it’s the first truly programmable blockchain to catch on and because of its rich community that welcomes experiments and partners of all stripes. Ethereum’s stature is also boosted by the role of its genius inventor, Vitalik Buterin, who has offered technical and moral influence at key moments but has for the most part faded gracefully into the background.
Ethereum finished 2022 on a high note after successfully achieving the technological miracle of switching its blockchain to proof of stake, in part thanks to support and guidance from the foundation.
