Nestled at the base of Pikes Peak—the summit that inspired “America the Beautiful”—the city of Fountain is a suburb of Colorado Springs that offers sweeping views and small-town charm within a 10-minute drive of all the larger city has to offer. This family-friendly town boasts shops and restaurants in its downtown area. But given the natural splendor of the region, outdoor activities are the main draw here, from hiking (there are a number of trails accessible to those with mobility issues) and skiing, to horseback riding and hot springs.    With Colorado Springs so close, residents have their pick of parks, including the Fountain Creek Regional Park, a 460-acre linear park between the two cities, and the Cattail Marsh Wildlife Area, which serves as a nature preserve and outdoor classroom for interested visitors. The U.S. Air Force Academy is located nearby, and the city is home to Pikes Peak International Raceway.   Housing prices are typically above the national average, but the area is more affordable than Denver for those who want to wake up to equally majestic scenery. You won’t find much nightlife in the laid-back suburb—but the diverse town offers families decent schools and a close-knit community feel. And if you end up missing the big city, Denver is a little less than two hours away by car. —AA
