The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare an extensive web of fault lines in the U.S. health care system, from its high costs to its lack of equitable access. As chief strategy officer for Anthem, the country’s largest for-profit health insurance federation, Bryony Winn is trying to address some of these problems—and make her lumbering, highly regulated industry move faster and smarter. Innovation in health care “is hard,” says Winn. But the Zimbabwe native and Rhodes Scholar, who studied international development and started her career at McKinsey, also sees opportunity in the telehealth uptake and rapid vaccine development of the past 18 months. “COVID-19 has fundamentally changed my industry, and we will continue to invest in innovation to meet the demands of our time,” she says.
