Few industries have been more battered by COVID than travel, and more than 18 months into the pandemic, Rigail’s Air France—Europe’s fifth largest airline—is still working to get its recovery off the ground. The airline, which is part of Air France–KLM, saw passengers fall 66% in 2020; for the first half of 2021, roughly 40% of its planes’ seats were filled. The airline, which lost more than $4 billion in 2020, received French government support to help it through the COVID crisis, though the financial assistance was conditioned on Air France meeting environmental and profitability targets in the coming years. Rigail, who has been vocal about the threat of climate change and the future of air travel, is very much on board, with targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
