M-Kopa works to eliminate the large, up-front costs that often serve as barriers to accessing energy, information, and financing. The company provides solar home systems, smartphones and other connected appliances to customers in East Africa on a pay-as-you-go basis. In that region, one would usually need upwards of $1,000 of cash on hand to purchase, say, a refrigerator or a television—a reality that is simply not feasible for someone making just two to three dollars a day, as M-Kopa says 80% of its customers do. M-Kopa allows its customers to access these appliances for a small daily fee (as low as 40 cents per day for a smartphone). By helping more people replace kerosene-based heating and cooking systems with solar ones, the company also helps reduce the adverse impacts of carbon dioxide emissions and smoke on health and climate change. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and with another office in London, M-Kopa currently serves around 950,000 customers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and hopes to continue to expand into additional African markets.
