Many companies these days are talking about leading with purpose, aligning their corporate mission with doing good for the world. What does leading with purpose mean for Zocdoc and for you? Well, for me personally, it means that I put myself in the service of someone, [ UNKNOWN ] responsibility. You need to do something with your life that makes a true difference for others. Beyond just making money, why does this company exist? Are they here for a better good, or is it just to make products and make money? Our purpose saves people's lives and makes communities safer. For the people that are with the company and for the millenials we hire they don't want just to pay check. They wanna make an impact. I can feel and I can see it in our own associates that they feel more energize I think they more fulfilled when they come to work everyday with the sense of purpose and the sense of meaning. When companies leave a purpose it's more than just a slogan It's really easy to have a slogan, and even companies get themselves in trouble probably have a slogan that can be read. But the question is, what are you doing about that? SOme people would say that it's next to impossible to do good, and still make money. Mm- hm. What is your reaction to that? I think that that's a false choice, I think you can do good and make money. ANd I think that And [ UNKNOWN ], that �� s what we �� re trying to do. In order to make profit, which is the number one goal of a public traded corporation, you should do good because your customers appreciate that, your employees appreciate that It feels good. It's the right thing to do. But that's a means to an end. The end is you must deliver on shareholder value. Shareholders demand it, that companies lead with a sense of purpose and that they have a broader purpose Other than just profits. And so I think shareholders have spoken loudly that that's important to them. Profits are still important and share price is still important but I think our shareholders have been very clear in their feedback. It doesn't matter what the measure is, value creation, revenue, profitability. Companies that have a well knit together purpose and sustainability approach win. [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ]

Oliver, you co- founded Zocdoc ten years ago but you took over almost two years ago as CEO. So what's next for Zocdoc? I mean, are you adding more services or are you just gonna continue doing more of the same? So we are constantly expanding, right? And for us, that is both a matter of geographic expansion, we now serve 60 % of the US population As well as specialty expansion. So we have everything from your chiropractor, acupuncturist to cardiothoracic surgeons or neurosurgeons on the site. The thinking is that in the long run Healthcare needs to be as convenient as calling a car, or ordering something online. That needs to be a completely seamless experience so that you can focus all your energy on getting better instead of how to actually get in front of a doctor. Mm- hm, so Zocdoc has been around for ten years, you just raised some more venture capital money. I think your valuation is close to 2 billion Dollars. Is this a time to take the company public? Is having an IPO the next step? I really don't spend time thinking about that. We're laser focused on building the business. There are so many needs that our patients have. We are very blessed to have very long term thinking. Investors in [ INAUDIBLE ] experiences patients. There are so many problems left to solve healthcare, that we are far from done. And then, what feedback are you getting from the patients? Do they come back to Zock Doc again and again? Or once they connect with a, let's say, primary care physician They rely on his or her network to connect with other physicians. They are absolutely repeat customers. And they tend to use us for a broad spectrum of medical needs also. They might start with a dentist or a primary care doctor, but end up booking their orthopedist or ENT with us. And tell us about the doctors. So you have a flat rate that you charge them, $ 3000 a year. Are they coming back? What is their retention rate? Yeah. So we have doctors that are on month to month. They can make a new decision every month, but they love the service. Because it enables them to serve the patient the way they want. Patients are very satisfied, Where they get access on their own terms. And it also improves the way their business works, making sure that they see patients every hour of the day that they're available for that. You know, it's puzzling that billions of dollars has gone into healthcare startups and healthcare ventures. And yet, we haven't seen any Real success stories, and why hasn't that happened? I think we see some companies that are making headway, but a lot of the innovation was driven by providers, or from super companies, and I think that the consumer- driven progress in healthcare has just begun. Zocdoc CEO: How The Company Became Two-Billion Dollar Company

CEO Oliver Kharraz explains how the company stays ahead.

Oliver, you cofounded Zocdoc with Cyrus Massoumi, and for the first eight years of the company he was the CEO. Now, you're in charge. Why the change in leadership? I think it's natural and happens as companies go through stages. I respect Cyrus tremendously, and the company would not exist in its current form without his leadership early on. I think as we followed how the market developed and as the market consolidated to help this was logical for us to double down on the enterprise, double down on marketing and product, and those sort of things that have traditionally left. So Zocdoc is big for a startup. You're valued at almost $ 2 billion. You do business all across the country. What do you have to do As a leader to set the course for Zock Dock now that you're in charge? Yeah the most important piece for us is to maintain the startup credo and the startup agility. So I've introduced the idea of the thoughtful failure, how can we continue to experiment? And reward individuals as we get larger. Because innovation and being able to be, and to continue to be first on the things that are unproven are very, very important to us. One of your leadership mantras is be an optimistic pragmatist. What do you mean by that and how is that principle guiding you in this new role that you're in. And so whats an optimistic pragmatist. Someone who assumes success and at the same time, plans for all the eventualities. And that's something that we have done at Zock Dark very well. We have a clearly articulate plan. The pragmatist part is that I want to understand, what is plan B? And I also wanna think about when do I stop investing into an effort. Gating an investment is one of the hardest things to do both for companies and entrepreneurs alike. How do you encourage leadership and innovation at all levels of the company so that? People take the initiative to change the things that they're supposed to change, take some risks. And rather than just playing it safe. Well, I'll give you an anecdote of my prior life. When I got accepted into med school, the first thing I did is start working as a [ INAUDIBLE ] Nurse's Assistant, and I [ INAUDIBLE ] from top to toe, so I would always understand what everyone in chain of command actually has to do. And being able to level with everyone in the organization is very, very important. And then you need to have an open ear. People need to know that they can bring up their ideas, no matter what their station in the organization, and that those are taken very seriously. Independent of hierarchy, because many times folks on the front end, they know more about what the customers want, what the patients want, than I might. And related to this is that what have you been saying to your employees to get them to believe in your new vision for a Zockdoc. And so that they follow your lead, and especially as you're going through this transition period? Look, I think it starts with radical honesty and candor. I told them, this is where I think we should go. These are the things we don't know yet. This is what we have to prove. This is your role and you proving this out. And as you do that, people get energized and say, yes, I think this is possible. I understand what I need to do in this. And then you collectively succeed And you collectively adjust as you see that parts of that need to be changed , sometimes accelerated or sometimes changed completely. That is very energizing for an organisation. But then, there are the holdouts, the ones who resist to that change. How do you get people on board with your vision? We As a technology company we need to accept that life is constantly changing for us. What we build today has a half life of two years and we will have disrupted ourselves. And so I think it's great to see how the organization as a whole has really embraced the need to change. All the time. It's not because I've become CEO or at some point in the future, someone else becomes CEO. We should be changing ourselves. Why wait for an external event? [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
