Some 92 million tons of garments end up in landfills every year—a major reason the apparel industry’s global emissions are expected to double by the end of the decade. Winmark helps combat that trend by recycling and reselling apparel (along with other items such as sporting goods and musical instruments). Since its inception in 2010, the company has resold over 1.6 billion items through its five brands, including Plato’s Closet and Once Upon a Child—equaling roughly 169 million units recycled annually, over 450,000 items recycled a day, and five items recycled per second. Winmark surpassed a $1 billion market cap, as annual gross sales have more than doubled to more than $1.5 billion since 2010. And Winmark’s more than 1,300 franchise locations provide jobs in local communities across North America, with each contributing over $390,000 annually on average to its local community.
