This furniture and housewares chain closed all 600-plus stores as the pandemic surged this spring. But unlike most of its retail peers, Williams-Sonoma paid staff for the duration of the store closures, and eschewed furloughs. The decision didn’t blunt its momentum: Williams-Sonoma recorded near-record profits in its most recent quarter, helped in part by store veterans who pivoted to e-commerce roles.
