Wilbur Ross Tells Davos: U.S. Is Done 'Being a Patsy' on Trade

Secretary Ron, I'm gonna start with you because the administration has been making a fair amount of news in the last few days. We had the tariffs on solar panels and Washington washing machines. Last Friday, there was a report out of USTR saying it was a mistake to bring China into the W. T. O. There are for boating, about action on intellectual property. And you've probably already picked up in the short time you've been here that a lot of people in Dabo's air saying, Is this the beginning of some sort of new trade war? What's your answer? No, I don't think so. Uh, trade contest, trade disagreements have been going on forever. The ones you reference, God knows, have been well publicized well in advance. So I can't imagine that the washing machine event or the solar panel event came as a big shock to anybody. Um, I think, though, that nobody is trying to ignite a gigantic thing like Smith would holy did during the Depression. That's not what this is all about, but what it is about this. We feel that there is an accumulated set of, I guess, debris of some incorrect policy decisions that our government another's made earlier in the process and that those need fixing. So, for example, I would take a bit of umbrage at the article. You referred us to the foreign policy article. The writer made the analogy that why are we worried about trade deficits? Because of you. Go and buy a car, you gave money. So that's a trade deficit, that you got a car and that's a fair bargain. Well, that goes fine, except what we're complaining about is the used car dealer who turned back the odometer to reveal far fewer miles in the car, ran and then he's still charges us. That's not a fair deal. That's not free trade. So I think the analogy limped a little bit in that regard. That was an article in foreign policy that said that there's a greater level of risk in the global trade system right now. Then there has been since World War two. Would you agree with that statement? No, I think there's a growing recognition of risk that have been accumulating right along, and I think the hopeful thing is you can't really solve problems unless you admit that they exist and people get to discuss, I want to go. I want to ask each of you I mean, it's clear from the discussion we've had here for the last hour that the global trading system that has existed since the end of World War Two is in a period of transition. The U. S is clearly not going to play the same role it has played in the past. There are, uh, A and they're clearly goingto have to be some kind of changes. So what I'd like each of you to do is to very quickly summarize what is your recommendation for global leaders and businesses to navigate this transition period that we're in right now. We don't intend to aggregate leadership that leadership is different from being a sucker and being a patsy. We would like to be the leader in making the world trade system more fair and more equitable. Toe all of the participants. It's not a lack of leadership. It's not a lack of willingness to lead. The fact that we have some issues with the present system is different from the idea of whether we're prepared to take leadership now. You may not like the direction of it, but our president is not as much a follower, and he is the leader
