Romney, Juniper has had three CEOs in the past two years. Through this experience what have you learned about how you build confidence in your leadership? Look its a great question and I think for any leader, its certainly a part of my leadership, its so important to have a real passion for what you do. My background in the company is I'm a technologist. I developed many of the products that are in the market today. And I think that in everything that you do, in all the communication that you have with your employees, that passion, the understanding of what you do, and the importance of what you do and why you do it. Need to come out and it doesn't mean that you have to be an engineer but it certainly helps to have that technical background because it really helps you transmit the passion that you have to the work that you do each and every day. I think that helps motivate people. Well, as Juniper goes through so much change, how do you keep. Your talent, so that they don't go to another company. So as long as we have a clear and deliberate strategy, we're working on interesting projects, you have a leadership team that truly cares about the people, then I think that the talent just follows naturally. One issue for a lot of technology companies is, is that technology is always changing. How do you manage and lead in an industry That is constantly going to change. This is where our DNA, as a challenger in this industry, applies so well. Because it's not just about challenging your competitors. It's about challenging the status quo. It's challenging yourself, and your assumptions about how to solve something. So we've always never been afraid. To try things differently. To solve a problem in new ways. That kind of mentality, behavior in the company, is very much encouraged. One that I look for in people. I look for, when I'm looking for people to have true opportunity and potential to grow in the organization, and one that's very much Rewarded in the company. So we've been talking a lot about leadership here. What is the best advice that you've got when it comes to this issue of leadership? I'd say, I started at a very young age, and my parents told me specifically, Rami you need to stick with it, you need to face any challenges and overcome the challenges. And those were Lifelong leadership lessons that have lasted with me to this day. I think that challenges are inevitable for any leader. It's how you react to those challenges that's so important. I always let challenge motivate me to try even harder and to ultimately prevail. I think this is a very powerful lesson. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]

Rami Rahim sits down with Fortune's Susie Gharib to discuss how innovation and disruption are built into the DNA at Juniper Networks.

So Rami, Juniper has been on a streak, better than expected earnings for a while now, your stock is doing very well, what's next for Juniper? You know, Juniper is right now at a heart of what it is, a massive transformation that's happening in the networking industry, a movement towards the cloud. When you think about the kinds of challenges one needs in developing this cloud, IP network innovation is really the center of that action. And that's the business that Juniper is in. Let's talk a little bit about this enormous transition, because customers are going from Big rowdy machines, the kinds of hardware that Juniper is famous for, and to cheaper, smaller, software- based solutions. What does this mean for Juniper? It is an opportunity for us. Juniper invests 85 % of all of our R & D in software That will not change. But what will change is the monetization of what we do will become more tied to software in the future. It's a matter of trend in the industry. It's also a matter of our strategy in the company. What does this mean for your customers? Do you think that you're gonna lose some customers, or is the mix gonna change? Not at all. In fact, if you think about the kinds of conversations, and projects we're working with our customers on. Their very much tied to the new future ways of delivering value and services to end users being enterprise or services and delivering that body in the form of software that fits in the cloud or sits on customer premise equipment is very much apart of the strategy that we're executing on. Let me put you on the spot a little bit. John Chambers of Cisco Told me recently that the number one reason that many companies fail is they miss market transitions. In that context is Juniper gonna be a disruptor or a victim of disruption. Juniper was born in this industry as a challenger to the status quo. We are a Silicon Valley successful start- up. That entered into the scene in a way where we wanted to provide a solution that was different than what was already out there. So being a disruptor, a challenger to the status quo is very much part of our DNA and it's an incredibly important part of my job to ensure that that challenger mentality lasts with us. Throughout till today and into the future. We're seeing a wave of mergers and acquisitions, as you know, and Juniper's name always comes up as a acquisition target. Are you open to something like that? You know, I think this industry, with all the changes and the transformation that's happening, requires a company that's dedicated and focused on IP network innovation. It's the heart of this transition that's happening around the world. And it deserves a pure- play innovator like Juniper. So we're operating as a company that is a pure- play innovator in networking. Juniper Networks: Disruptor or disrupted?

Rami, as you know, the Federal Reserve meets this week. It's a very critical meeting. A lot of debate about whether policy makers should or shouldn't raise interest rates. As the CEO of a very big tech company, what do you wanna see happen when it comes to interest rates? I focus primarily on what we can control. And I think interest rates will inevitably increase over time. When, and how, and how much Is something that I can't control and we don't really worry too much about it. Ultimately, if they do, and when they do increase, it's a sign that the economy is doing well. And that, in my opinion, is a net positive for us at [ UNKNOWN ]. What do higher interest rates, even if it's just a small move, mean for the world of tech spending? I don't anticipate if there is a gradual move that will have any major effect on. Tax spending. The fundamentals of this industry as such that the need to invest in network infrastructure and the value of those networks is there, and I expect that it will continue to be there. I'd like to get your take on, from your point of view, of how the US economy is doing. What is the outlook for the business environment? From a tech perspective. From my perspective, it's actually doing quite well. And I'd say the bright spot in our last quarter's earnings was the U. S. and it was pretty broad based. There is still a little bit of weakness in telecom spending for the tier one providers, but it's largely offset by spending With cloud providers, cable operators, the broader enterprise especially the Fortune 500 space, and I think our strategy to diversify our business across these key market verticals has really helped us in building momentum recently > Simply offsetting some of the weakness in that specific tier one vertical. So you sound so positive Rommie, I mean are, as a point of view running your own business are you spending more, are you expanding more, are you hiring more? > You know we are definitely hiring in key areas for example in software and Cloud services there Really, the future of where this industry is. We're very thoughtful about how we're managing our expenditures as well. We want to make sure we spend, not ahead of revenue, but we spend in a way that drives revenue growth. And I think that prudent approach to growth and how we invest is working very well for us. What about your hiring plans? We're hiring. We certainly are hiring. We're always looking for talent. I, myself, participate in interviews, in seeking talent, and playing offense to get the best talent in the industry. And I think we have a pretty good track record. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
