Everything you see will one day belong to the garbage industry, everything. And 99 % of it within a year. And not only will it be property of the garbage industry, you will have paid them to take it. And for how immense that is that it will the owner of everything without a single exception It's really uninspired what happens with it. Most of it ends up in a pile or gets burned, 2 % gets recycled, I mean that is really uninspiring. So you have this immense thing with no innovation, which is a blue sky opportunity to innovate like crazy and rethink everything. [ MUSIC ] So Terracycle began 16 years ago as a company dedicated to eliminating the idea of waste. And the way we do that is to recycle what's not recyclable, from dirty diapers to cigarette butts, flexible food packaging to toothbrushes. And then to integrate recyclable material back into objects. But Terracycle's been very dedicated to this idea of making disposability more circular. We are not challenging disposability, but, we are making things that are disposable more recyclable and more recycled. And this led to Luke because our mission is to eliminate the idea of waste. And we realized that recycling is solving the symptoms Of waste but not the root cause of waster. And so the question became what is the root cause of waste? And where we landed was using something once. You know we vilify plastic today but I don't think plastic is necessarily evil. I don't think metal is evil. I think using them once. Is the wrong. Plastic is an amazing material. It has a lot of great properties, but the fact that it's such a cheap material especially in its single use format has really lead to the garbage crisis. That's the number one primary thing found in landfills. It's mucking up our waterways and all of our systems. It's become like a thing that's crippling our world in a lot of ways. How do we solve for the negatives of disposability, while maintaining the positives. The breakthrough for Loop was one simple question, do you really wanna own disposable packaging when it's empty? So loop is a really cool interactive platform where customers can sign up. They get products in reusable durable containers. They can either sign up for each product as a subscription or a one time only purchase. Then you get your durable, reusable shipping tote sent to you with all of your products inside. Once your containers are empty they go back in the durable, reusable shipping tote, it comes back to us. We send it off to a cleaning facility and have it sanitized. Then those empty containers go back to the brand partners to be refilled with new products. Then it completes the loop or the cycle. [ MUSIC ] In loop instead of the consumer owning the package the consumer borrows the package and the package is always property. Of the manufacturing and magic happens when that happens. Because then the package becomes an asset to the Unilever, Coca- Cola, Pepsi, Nestle is of the world. And then they're financially motivated forget sustainability financially motivated to make a long lasting and durable and durable makes your packaging reusable but also beautifully designed with really luxury materials. And even potentially brings new features to the package, like keeping things fresh longer, cooled longer, warm longer. All these things you couldn't do in disposable. It allows these brands to innovate in ways they could never innovate before, and that has unlocked this entire new ecosystem. System, with almost every major consumer product company now partnered with Loop, creating durable alternatives to their currently disposable offerings. The beauty is I don't have to have you believe in my products, it's already the world's best products. I don't have to ask you to shop at a new store. It's already likely the stores you're shopping at. All I'm really asking you to do is would you like that in disposable or durable? [ MUSIC ] To come over to me [ APPLAUSE ] Thank you [ UNKNOWN ] and thank you all for being here, it's great to see so many friends in the room that have quite literally made this happen so yhe idea of [ UNKNOWN ] is one really simple question which is to ask ourselves. Why are we in a world of disposability? And how do we really think about it, and emerge into a new environment? Well what's really exciting for me is, Loop is very much a multi stakeholder collaboration. We couldn't do it on our own, no vendor or no manufacturer could do it on their own, no retailer could do it on their own, Is everyone working together, competitors and friends all coming together. What do we think our relationship with using something once? As individuals we feel unempowered, we feel that it's the big companies, big manufacturers, big retailers that decide everything and we're just sheep to the slaughter right? And I've heard that from consumers all the time, but I don't agree at all because we vote for the future we want with money multiple times a day with what we buy. Because what manufacturers and retailers are looking at is not to sell us what we don't want, but to figure out what we want and give it to To us. So if we change our desires, the things on the shelf will change, full stop. I think for us it's all about keeping up with consumer demands and keeping up with consumer trends. And we'll go where the consumers are, give them solutions that work for them in their lives while still providing them with incredible, delicious, high quality products. We're interested in tackling all of the That our customers are telling us that they are important to them. And so we use plastics and their disposability is one of those issues. It's the reusable part that we have to figure out. What does that mean to consumers? And this gives us an opportunity to learn that real time. We have to reinvent the future of how we consume. And if we use systems like Loop Really take hold and become the majority of how we consume and the concept of waste goes away. [ MUSIC ]

Closing The Loop: The End of Disposable Plastics

This company has partnered with some of the world's biggest retailers in an effort to get rid of single use containers.

[ MUSIC ] Welcome to Broad Strokes. Fortune's show were we talk about the news that matters to women. So on Monday, this week, Donald Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Whitehouse. And on the agenda Women's issues. So they gathered a bunch of different CEO's both from Canada and the US, as well as Ivanka Trump, who was apparently one of the masterminds behind this gathering. Yeah. I mean, it was really interesting for me to see Ivanka at the table. I mean, this is a women who has absolutely no official role in the White House, and yet here she is She also posted a picture of herself on social media in the President's chair, and this caused a lot of controversy on social media. Yeah, I mean, it was a weird move really, considering all the criticism that the administration has gotten about nepotism. Obviously Ivanka Trump's husband has an official role in the White House. So, you have to think that they knew they were going to get some push back on that. Yeah, I mean it's also weird, considering that it doesn't seem ike the Trump administration cares too much about nepotism charges , that she's not getting an official role. Yeah, I mean, I'm happy that she's having these dinners. I'm happy that these meetings are happening. It's great to see women's economic issues out there, something is being discussed at the White House. But the real test is can he put legislation out there? Can he put policy out there? And actually change something. So a new book came out this week by Tiffany Dufu called Drop the Ball. And it's basically the complement to Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In. So whereas Sandberg is saying lean in at the office, Dufu is saying lean out at home, let men pick up more of the slack. Do more child care Unpaid laborer, things like that. Yeah, I mean, part of this really resonated for me, for sure I do the dishes more in our house. But on the other hand, again, it puts a lot of the onus on women. And I'd love to see someone write a book Saying, hey men! Here's what you need to do. So it makes me wonder. We've had so many of these big, feminist call to actions. Do we really need these books anymore? Yeah, I mean, it's true that we've had a lot of these books. But a lot of them have been, frankly, written by rich, white women. And so, what's really nice about this one is that Tiffany Dufu is African- American. I feel like she Her book might speak to a broader audience than Sandberg's book, or than Sallie Krawcheck new book 'Own It', which really kind of come at these issues from a very privileged point of view. Yeah, I mean we'll have to see if this resonates more for our wider variety of But what was really resonating from me this week are the Clinton women's Twitter feeds. So Chelsea Clinton, usually her tweets are pretty innocuous. She tweets a lot about women's issues, children's issues, the environment. But ever since the Trump immigration ban hurt feeders transformed and just kind of really political, really pointed. Meanwhile, her mother's feed has basically just been trolling Donald Trump, pointing out problems in his adminstration. Yeah. I mean it's been super entertaining for me to see Clinton getting into a Twitter war with Kellyanne Conway. But aside from being super entertaining, I think the clinging women [ UNKNOWN ] might be pointing to either or both of them potentially running for office. There is actually a political story this week about Hillary Clinton, and how all signs, basically, pointing to her running again in 2020. Now, The writer cites no additional new information, but more things like this Twitter feed, the fact that she's writing a new book, the fact that she has distanced herself from the Clinton Global Initiative, all things that she would not have to do if she weren't running for office. But it's not just Hillary, so these rumors are also out there about Chelsea Saying that she might be considering a congressional run in New York. She denied it, but at the same time, she's also talked about the interest in running for political office at some point in her career. So one thing I think we know is that the Clinton name is not going to disappear from political headlines anytime soon. Unfortunately, that's all the time we have this week Broad Strokes.
