Tesco is the U.K.’s biggest supermarket chain, growing from a 1920s London market stall to commanding over a quarter of the country’s grocery market, with over 3,800 supermarkets and convenience stores in the U.K., plus a further 700 stores across Ireland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. About 15% of the group’s revenues come from its wholesale division Booker, which it acquired in 2018, though it has also branched into telecoms (Tesco Mobile), banking (Tesco Bank) and data analytics consultancy (dunnhumby, which helped to develop Tesco’s pioneering Clubcard loyalty programme in the mid 1990s before Tesco acquired the firm). Tesco is based in the U.K. and has around 330,000 employees.
