Sysco is the world’s largest broadline food distributor and the country’s biggest and most profitable wholesale food-service provider. Sysco, whose name is derived from an acronym for Systems and Services Company, sells, markets, and distributes food and nonfood products to over 600,000 clients including restaurants, health care and educational facilities, lodging establishments, and other customers in 90 countries. The company owns and operates roughly 330 distribution facilities worldwide. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic severely impacted Sysco’s business operations, as restaurants, schools, and hotels around the world were forced to shut for the better part of a year. As a result, Sysco’s sales in 2020 decreased $7.2 billion versus the year before.
