Equinor is responsible for about 70% of Norway’s oil and gas output, pumping 2 million barrels of oil every day. Originally called Statoil, it was established in 1972 by the Norwegian government—which still owns 67% of the business—to exploit the country’s considerable offshore oil and gas reserves. It is primarily involved in exploration and production, as well as energy trading, distribution and marketing, although it also has growing renewable power generation capacity. Equinor has expanded internationally—it is one of the largest oil and gas producers in the Gulf of Mexico, for example—with direct operations in Brazil, the U.S., the U.K. and Poland, and a presence in 25 more countries. It is headquartered in Stavanger, Norway.
