One of the oldest financial institutions in the U.S., Boston-based State Street offers a diverse array of products across its asset management and banking divisions. The company helped pioneer exchange-traded products, including launching the first ETF in 1993, and counts as one of the Big Three index fund managers alongside Vanguard and BlackRock. State Street also serves as one of the top asset custodians in the U.S., including expanding into crypto assets such as Bitcoin. State Street continues to launch new investment vehicles. In 2025 the company partnered with private equity giant Apollo to create a private credit ETF available to retail investors. State Street is the second-oldest continuously operating bank in the U.S., with its predecessor receiving a charter from Massachusetts Gov. John Hancock in 1792.
