Cofounded by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey in 2009, Block has expanded from its initial point-of-sale company, Square, to offer a suite of products ranging from music streaming to Bitcoin mining. Dorsey previously split his time between Square and Twitter before resigning from the social media platform in 2021 and renaming the company Block that same year. While Square remains the conglomerate’s core business, its other flagship products include Cash App, a consumer payments rival to Venmo and Zelle, as well as Tidal, which competes against Spotify. Driven by Dorsey, Block also operates in the crypto space, including creating Bitcoin hardware wallets under the Bitkey brand.
