Specsavers was launched by Mary and Steve Perkins from a ping-pong table in their home in Guernsey. Forty years on, it is the largest privately owned optical group in the world. But it's still family-run, a fact the company culture strives to reflect. A joint venture model means each store is part-owned and managed by its own directors, who are given support from key specialists in support offices. Generous allowances for eye and hearing care for employees are provided alongside enhanced time off, an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme allowing employees and partners to exchange part of their salary for electric or low-emission cars, long-term service awards, and more. A strong apprentice scheme runs through all areas of the business, with 90% of successful apprentices taking a role in the store where they trained.
