Southern Ohio Medical Center, based in Portsmouth, has been a 14-year mainstay of the 100 Best Companies list, and for good reason: Its identity is rooted in addressing the needs of its employees. The past year proved particularly difficult as the realities of the pandemic hit its workforce. For instance, at the beginning of the pandemic, SOMC had to furlough nearly 500 employees. However, the 233-bed hospital system gave those workers extended medical and dental benefits; made provisions such as making up for missed health premiums upon their return; and was eventually able to bring the vast majority of staff back to work. The firm hopes to reinstate several dozen workers affected by the cuts once its fitness centers can safely reopen. SOMC also bolstered the surrounding community by canceling non–life-threatening surgeries to facilitate coronavirus patient care and by creating a community resource line to inform local residents about the virus.
