Open-source code is built upon transparency and collaboration, but security has often been <a href="https://socket.dev/blog/series-a">put on the back burner</a>, according to Socket, a San Francisco–based startup founded in 2020. Socket’s founder, Feross Aboukhadijeh, would know: He’s a prolific contributor to open-source projects, maintaining more than 100 projects, and is the creator of WebTorrent. His startup offers tools to help secure open-source software, or code that the public can freely modify and use. In a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz in August, Socket raised $20 million to add to its $4.6 million seed investment.

–Socket is backed by a who’s-who of Silicon Valley power players including Figma founder Dylan Field, Box CEO Aaron Levie, Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison, Dropbox cofounder Arash Ferdowsi, YouTube cofounder Jawed Karim, and Eventbrite cofounders Julia and Kevin Hartz. 
–Socket offers a code search feature, a ChatGPT-powered threat analysis system, and a browser extension that verifies code a user wants to install is trustworthy. Its tools are currently compatible with JavaScript, Python, and Go, and it plans to add eight more programming languages next year.
