Affordable housing can be hard to find in prosperous Northern Europe. Back in 1996, construction firm Skanska teamed with home furnishings giant Ikea to form BoKlok—a unique partnership that has since built some 12,000 sustainably designed modular homes across Scandinavia. Last year, the companies expanded BoKlok into the U.K., with the goal of providing quality housing in working-class and lower-income communities across that country.<br />

The sustainability focus is par for the course for Skanska. The construction industry accounts for roughly 39% of energy-related carbon-dioxide emissions, according to the World Green Building Council. Recognizing that, Skanska has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045; in the past five years, it’s already reduced its emissions by 28%.
