Backed by private equity giant KKR, Semperis specializes in protecting a prime hacker target: Active Directory (AD), the Microsoft-powered database that stores the identity information and access privileges of every employee in a company’s network. Because the AD effectively holds the keys to the kingdom, ransomware attackers have increasingly used it as the gateway to take control of an entire system. For more than 90% of companies, if the AD isn’t secure, nothing is, Semperis says. The nine-year-old company offers a full range of services focused on AD, including threat prevention and detection, as well as recovery. With offices in New Jersey, Israel, and Canada, Semperis has raised a total of $257 million in funding, and was reportedly valued at more than $1 billion in its most recent March funding round.

–Founders Mickey Bresman, Matan Liberman, and Guy Teverovsky didn’t take the traditional route for Israeli cyber founders, which includes first serving in the intelligence sector of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) known as Unit 8200. Bresman, who works as CEO, began his career in the IDF’s Navy and later worked as chief technology officer of YouCC Technologies, a cloud security consulting company. Research and development head Liberman previously worked as a software engineer implementing systems for the office of the Israeli prime minister. Teverovsky, now chief technology officer, formerly worked for five years as an engineer for Microsoft.
