Jerome you were brought on to be CEO of Sealed Air a few years ago to turn it around, you did that. What was the hardest part of being in that kinda situation. The condition for success is two fold. The number one condition is that you have to have the employees be willing to change. The second condition is that you have to add value to your customers. Then the rest will follow. Before you came to Sealed Air, you worked at Dow Chemical for 35 years. Yeah. Don't remind me. Obviously. [ LAUGH ] Of that. 35 years. Fabulous opportunity. But these were two different companies with two different cultures, obviously. Yes. So were you the one who had to adapt and change to the new culture of your new company, or the other way around, if the employees and the executives of Sealed Air had to follow the leader? $ 60 billion dollar company I was managing when I left $ 12 billion division is very different than a $ 7 billion dollar company. Number one rule is that the people who work around you have to have earned the right to be around you. Which means that they have to be the best at what they do. If you have people around you who are not the best The people below all of those people are gonna be very cynical and critical. And if you have the best people around you, as I do by the way, then you have you're going to have the people rally because the best people will call for the best people also And this is how you create an atmosphere where people believe. In your career, I'm sure along the way a lot of people were giving you advice. But when it comes to actually leadership, what do you think was the best leadership advice that you ever got? Follow your instincts. Work Work hard on very fine that your instincts are right, but follow your instincts.

Here’s How to Turn Your Company Around

Let's talk a little bit about this new bubblewrap, because we know that shippers like FedEx and UPS are now charging for fees for not only the size of package, but also the weight. And so you've come up with this new kind of bubblewrap, tell us about it. What we're really selling is cube optimization to your point is damage control. And is a much better consumer experience. When you think about it, those boxes that you receive at home are clearly oversized most of the time. This is by lack of optimization. So we have developed equipment and we have developed packaging which can reduce up to 50 % of freight cost of that box. By reducing the volume. Now I understand this new bubble wrap, which you're calling I Bubble Wrap. Uh- huh. I love that name, costs less. So what does this mean to your company's sales and profits? That it's going to be okay. So you are, you are going to take a bit of a hit. We are, we are here. No, we are here to add value to our customers. We are surprising, we're delighting our customers with revolution resolutions which make them win and we share in the value. We're not a consumer company. So what is important is to understand that when you are in the hygiene business Everybody knows Diversey. That is an iconic brand. If you are in the food business, everybody knows Cryovac. That is an iconic brand. And if you are in the protective packaging, and also because of the popping effect, If you are in the packaging business, everybody knows Barbara. This is what is important. What was surprising to me as I was preparing to talk to you, is that I didn't realize that sealed air is mostly in the food packaging business. Bubble wrap is a very small part. That's right. Of your business. And it's a fast growing business, this food packaging. Why is that? What food packaging is growing and we are the world leader of protein packaging. Meat, fish, cheese. Believe it or not, meat waste in retailer is in the mid single digits. So call it about 5 %. 5 % of the meat which goes in the store is wasted. That's an enormous number. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]

There's a New Bubble Wrap in Town

Sealed Air has operations all around the world, in more than 175 countries. So, Jerome, I'd like to hear your take on how you think the global economy will do in 2016. In terms of the global economy, I think that it is going to be impacted in Europe by the terrorist attacks, and all these kind of things. I think in the U. S. it's gonna end up as being a good season. Especially in e- commerce. I think that generally speaking, we are in an environment which is more of the same as what we have been living through in the past few years. And therefore, we shouldn't be pessimistic. Everybody is worried about China. From what you're seeing over there, and you do a lot of business in China, right? Yes. From what you're seeing, do you see that the economy there is gonna pick or is it gonna slow down? I think that it's stabilizing and I think it is gonna slowly improve from there. I think that we are going to see at this [ UNKNOWN ], we're gonna see Better growth than we have seen in 15. You also do a lot of business in Latin America. What's the story over there? How do you think it's going to do in the new year? So Venezuela doesn't exist anymore as a business or at most it's very very difficult. And that has hurt us this year. THen Brazil in a very tense situation, I think things are likely to improve compared to 2015 which has been a very difficult year. In Argentina we've been growing very nicely, we'll see what the economy does and this is accounting to transition I think that we should expect some bumps on the road But I think that we shouldn't just throw the baby with the bath water. Political and economic issues are in the headlines every day, a lot of anxiety about it. What worries you most? What worries me most would be by definition a recession. Because a global recession. And you have some people, some banks or so which are putting some probability. Right. To that would be an issue. Having said that, we have learned to live in the last seven years with low global growth. Our business in the U. S. when the GDP growth was 1. 5 to 2 % has been doing okay. So at the end of the day, it is about agility, it is about being there always on the look to transform markets. And that's what we're doing. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
