San Diego–based nonprofit health care system with five hospitals, Scripps makes our list this year for the 13th time. Scripps found itself quite literally on the front lines of the pandemic on Feb. 5, 2020, when Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, were quarantined just miles away—and then as the pandemic gained steam across the West Coast. Scripps was also early to notice problems like the nationwide shortage of ventilators and, especially, personal protective equipment for staff. In response, the health system organized a major donation drive and experimented with new techniques to protect health workers, helping Scripps maintain the trust of its staff. One employee praised the public leadership shown by CEO Chris Van Gorder in helping ICU staff share their experiences early in the pandemic, when they had an early glimpse into just how bad things might get.
