For many big businesses, cutting their own carbon emissions is the easy part; getting their suppliers to do the same is a vast headache. Since 2021 Schneider Electric, which specializes in energy management, has been organizing “cohorts” of companies and suppliers to team up to purchase renewable energy—the idea being that a bigger group of customers means both lower prices and simpler logistics. So far Schneider has worked with more than 2,700 suppliers, in industries including pharma, semiconductors, mining, and food and beverage, and the company has coordinated four major energy-purchase agreements in the U.S. and Spain.
