This software giant went through numerous rounds of layoffs in 2023 as the tech industry pulled back on spending, but new innovations in workplace AI could be a benefit to the remaining workforce. People from underrepresented backgrounds have made up 50% of Salesforce’s workforce since early 2022, and a portion of executive compensation is tied to diversity initiatives. The company boasts 13 distinct equality groups led by employees with 300 chapters in 26 countries. More than half of all employees are members of at least one. It’s been a tough few months for big tech firms, and Salesforce has not been immune, <a href="https://fortune.com/longform/marc-benioff-salesforce-cost-cuts-layoffs-acquisitions-efficiency/">laying off</a> approximately 8,000 workers since December 2022. Known for its leadership in gender pay equity, the company has doubled down on efforts to create a fair and equitable environment for all workers. Salesforce spent $5.6 million in the past year—and more than $22 million since 2015—to address any unexplained differences in pay. As a founding member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Parity Alliance, the company will work to expand equal pay and gender equality throughout the tech industry. The company has also expanded benefits over the past year, including introducing Cleo Teens, a program that offers guidance and advice for parents with kids ages 13 to 18. And as some states adopt legislation that limits health care access, Salesforce has offered to help relocate impacted employees and their families, offering financial assistance and temporary housing. In turn, Salesforce employees are eager to do good work: The company offers 56 paid volunteer hours per year, and workers have taken 303,000 hours over the past year to volunteer in their local communities.

AI-Innovators-2023-Salesforce

The cloud-based customer relationship management platform has been using AI since 2016 under the umbrella of its AI platform Einstein. To grow its offerings for customers and employees, Salesforce announced that Einstein GPT, launched in March 2023, would integrate with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. Some key users of Einstein bots include Formula 1, which leverages the tech to offer personalized fan experiences, and Gucci, which has used it for customer-facing aspects of that business. Salesforce also operates a generative AI-focused venture capital arm through which it plans to invest $500 million in the tech. Security of data has been a top priority in Salesforce’s AI expansion endeavors so that large language models don’t accidentally leak customer data. The company emphasizes a “human in the loop” where generative AI is involved to prevent misuse and guard against AI hallucinations that could adversely impact customers. Clara Shih was appointed the head of AI in May 2023, before which she led Salesforce Service Cloud. The company is looking to AI to propel its growth and has introduced a suite of tools that help enterprises tap on the power of generative AI, such as <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://www.salesforce.com/news/press-releases/2023/06/12/ai-cloud-news/">AI Cloud</a>. Benioff expects <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/12/salesforce-ceo-says-slack-will-play-a-prominent-role-in-ai.html">messaging platform Slack</a> to be a key part of the AI push. Salesforce has also made deals such as the acquisition of California-based <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="http://airkit.ai/">Airkit.ai</a> and expanded its partnerships with AWS, Google, and Databricks to further bolster its strategy.

When the world was reeling from the outbreak of the pandemic, software giant Salesforce initiated efforts to aid people both inside and outside the company. Salesforce donated more than 60 million pieces of safety gear to health care workers and their communities. It also donated about $30 million to small businesses, marginalized communities, and schools. Within the company, Salesforce enabled parents to take up to six extra weeks off work, and offered reimbursements of $500 a month for childcare and educational resources. Most recently, the company announced that it would permanently allow employees the option to work remotely. “During this pandemic, our company has shown its true colors,” one staffer says. “It makes me so grateful every day.”

This year’s list marks Fortune's 18th year of partnering with Great Place to Work. Google ranks No.1 for the sixth time, and 16 new companies make impressive debuts, including Acuity (No. 3), Twitter (No. 24), and Riot Games (No. 13).
