Rocket strives to bring positive change to its hometown of Detroit—a city where Rocket founder, local billionaire Dan Gilbert, has become a considerable philanthropist. The company aims to simplify complex and inequitable systems thus ensuring that every American has access to stable, healthy housing. One way Rocket achieves this is through its Neighbor to Neighbor program, a door-to-door canvassing effort that connects residents to property tax assistance and other resources. Over a 15-year period, more than 150,000 Detroit properties have been sold through the annual property tax option, causing residents to risk losing their homes. Since 2015, Rocket has helped eligible homeowners apply for tax assistance to keep their homes. Between 2015 and 2019, the number of occupied homes entering the county tax auction decreased by 94%. (The program has since expanded to Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Atlanta.)
The Rocket Home Grant program provides employees up to $10,000 in down payment assistance: It’s proved to be an instant hit, with 100 team members taking advantage of the program in the first few months of availability.
