Publix Super Markets, founded in 1930, is the largest employee-owned company in the U.S. During the pandemic, the culture around employee ownership has helped Publix to retain employees and keep operations steady at a time when many other grocers have grappled with high turnover. In April 2022, the company's board of directors approved a five-for-one stock split that lowered the price of shares and made it easier for newer employees to buy in. The chain has almost 1,300 stores, primarily in the southeastern U.S., and Publix saw a 7% increase in revenue in 2021. Publix also recently donated more than 50 million pounds of produce as part of an initiative to support farmers and food banks in the Southeast.
