Next, the podcast about the changing rules of business leadership. I'm Alan Murray and I'm Mia after years of helping Silicon Valley's high growth companies expand internationally, I thought there had to be a much easier way to help companies hire talent in new markets without setting up branches and subsidiaries in each country. My vision was to just set up one company in each country and give all of our customers access to it so that they could quickly and easily be able to hire talent in each country while being compliant with the local labor hr and tax laws and then also building technology on top to make it automated. How is it that you're doing so well? At a time when in theory, globalization is in retreat, I think that there is a movement or like the idea of, hey, you know, I want to buy for my local grocer. I wanna, I wanna grow my food in my backyard and I, and I think that's wonderful and people do it or I want to buy American. But the reality is, is that our, our, our entire economic ecosystem is so interwoven so closely together that if any, any size, any business of any scale ultimately has people and talent from all over the world and you just can't build an enterprise level business or even any, any high growth company has talent from all over the world. So I just don't see it. I don't see, I don't believe that globalization is in reverse. What are the, the kind of up and coming hubs so that, that you're seeing India is really interesting and compelling. I mean, that country has been just such a marvel to watch from a business perspective in the early two thousands companies were always outsourcing there and it was, it was considered like cheap talent now what we're seeing and especially in the last five years, the digital economy and, and like the, the modernization of the economy that they've built from the ground up in country is really incredible. Now, we're seeing engineers in India being paid the same as engineers in Ireland, for example. And it's just, it's awesome to see like a whole nation come online in, in the course of a of a couple of decades. Can you talk about how A I is accelerating what you're doing? So the vast majority of our business can be fully automated. I think about 95% of our business can be automated. And that's because on boarding an employee in a country, it's like the same questions every time. How many, how many vacation days does this person need? What's the benefits requirements? So a lot of that can just be managed through A I, we use A I within our product platform, we call it JIA and it's the first of its kind global Intelligence assistant, which basically makes it faster and easier for companies to hire, manage and, and manage all of their global legal hr and tax compliance globally. In combination with our platform, I'm curious to hear a little bit about your path to founding the company um because it wasn't a traditional path when I was right out of college, I thought I wanted to be an anthropologist and I went and lived in the highlands of Northern Guatemala and lived with an indigenous family. We're getting to this now. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Was that the first global Globalization partners office in the highlands of Guatemala? I think it was probably where it was seated all in, for sure. Anyway, I was hanging out in this village in the northern highlands of Guatemala trying to follow in the footsteps of an anthropologist from the 19 fifties, Maude Oaks. And after a certain period of time, I realized that being a twentysomething year old young blonde woman, trying to study shamanic traditions in the northern highlands of Guatemala and learn an ancient language. Nobody had ever heard of probably was better for National Geographic than real life. And um not as, not as fun as I thought it was gonna be. I left Guatemala and I ended up applying for business school shortly after that and, and got an MB A in international management shortly after that was um advising the high growth companies in the early two thousands, like uh Netsuite and Tesla and Inane and was ultimately like an outsourced international compliance advisor, helping them set up their companies and, and, and manage their headcount all over the globe. And in doing that, I was managing lawyers and tax advisors and accountants in like 60 different countries. Um and kind of doing the same thing over and over again. And I just thought if I could build this once in a way that every company could have access to it, I would have a much more scalable business platform.

Jason and I were both investing in Bitcoin, both interested in Bitcoin. We talked about it a little bit. Jason goes down really deep rabbit holes on youtube. And I remember one day Jason sent me a video with no explanation of some guy in like middle America who had figured out how to heat his pool with Bitcoin mining. We're open from 9 a.m. to midnight every night. And so we're constantly running these machines to create our product. So, you know, our con Ed Bill kind of makes us want to throw up. We heat, we use heat, we actually buy energy to make heat. When Jason found this immersion mining and the ability to pull heat off mining Bitcoin, it made all the sense in the world like we get a rebate for the energy that we buy. I'm Jason Goodman and I'm Travis Talent. We're the co founders of Bath House. We have two locations, one in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and one in the flat iron district of Manhattan. Travis. And I met hanging out around a campfire. We became good friends. We knew we wanted to work together and we had discussed like different ideas and came together on building a bathhouse. I think that we just saw the opportunity for American culture to re embrace the traditional bathhouses that were there. As soon as I started going to bath houses with Jason, it was like a light bulb went off and I started using them for recovering to start feeling much better than I'd ever felt. And pretty quickly when we started going to these dingy bathhouses, we were just frustrated with the products. I think we decided that we wanted to do this. And I think we signed a lease about two months later. So we kind of just threw ourselves into it the way that these miners work. Miners are just computers, right? They just run algorithms to uncover Blockchain. It's like taking one of those computers that gets hot, we strip the fans off, we put them in a special dialectic fluid. And so now instead of that heat going into the air or being hot to the touch on your computer, it's much more powerful than that. It goes and heats the oil around it. And then you pull that heat out. Eventually on heat exchanger, it's basically a very powerful computer that runs so hard and is working so hard that, you know, it creates heat as a by product. In Williamsburg, we have 12 miners, we're producing about 1000, 200 tera has in Williamsburg and about 2000 tera hash in flat iron. It's very easy to set up a system like ours yourself at home. It's off the shelf parts, a lot of the parts you can buy from Home Depot or from like plumbing supply.com off the shelf heat exchangers off the shelf circulation palms and it's piping. So when we first started mining, we were projecting that we would be producing enough ter has to mine 1.25 even up to possibly even two Bitcoin per year. That was when the Bitcoin network was doing about 200 X has total now that we're pushing 500 X hash, um which means that a lot more miners or a lot more computing power has joined the network since we started, I think we're both bullish on the market long term. And, you know, again, it's a fun side project. It's uh you know, kind of like a little treasury, sit there and grow and figure it out one day. We want it to be efficient. Not like, oh, how much Bitcoin can we make? We are not trying to recover our energy costs necessarily with Bitcoin. We want to treasury the Bitcoin because we're long term believers in Bitcoin think of it as a rebate on our heating costs. You know, every business has expenses and every business has ways they make money. I think this is an important topic for our civilization to have. And what you're really saying is it, should somebody have the um moral authority to decide who gets energy and who doesn't, who decides which use of energy is moral and which use of energy is not moral? Why is a pool heater? A moral use of energy and a computer that runs a Bitcoin node or a Bitcoin miner not, I would argue that Bitcoin is, is a very, very moral use of energy because having a fair and equitable money is a very important thing for society. I think environmentalists or people that commented negatively. I think that they should actually be happy with us because we are a miner that is not going out there and buying fresh energy just for the purpose of mine, of mining. We're buying the same energy that we need to run our business, whether we're mining Bitcoin or not. And I think that it would be great if more businesses did this.

Whirlpool CEO: AI is making kitchens and appliances smarter 

mark. It's amazing how much artificial intelligence ai is transforming business. And you obviously know because role pool started using Ai technology 10, 15 years ago. What innovation has a I brought to pull one of the first month was a lot about sensing technologies and products. Um Now it sounds very basic but you know take a washing machine, it's critical to understand what kind of load do you have in the washing machine that determines water usage, energy usage and detergent usage. Um So the combination of sensor sensor technology, but even how we can measure the talk of mortar that together gives you the right data points to understand in the machine, what is really in what's the weight of the machine below? Even the consumer has never entered the data once, you know that you can adjust the algorithms in the machine to optimize the program according to the actual load. That was one of the first ones kind of 10, 15 years ago. So what has all this Ai technology meant for consumers? You know, we hear so much about smart kitchens, smart appliances, you know, from a consumer perspective, it means that not every cycle takes two hours, you know, depending on the load, it could be done after 90 minutes, 17 minutes. That's what AI brings because it's optimized cycle, but then it moved into other areas like for example, often you know where the ovens now sensing technology visual recognition. Um we can recognize it in the oven. Is the meat done or not. Um And that's a I mean obviously that's a big issue um is a crispy etcetera. So the combination of sensing and visual technology coupled with image recognition which has advanced so much the last five or 10 years. Um you can optimize without it consumer ever having to worry about it. You also using your Ai in your manufacturing operations. Tell us how ai makes your manufacturing more efficient and also smarter. I think the biggest benefit we really get from quality assurance and you know, trying to get the right quality and factoring before the product is a critical element has massive cost certification. So I think that's where we saw the biggest advancement on quality, but now also managing process efficiencies um and particularly what we call assembly yield in the face of component shortages. That's where we saw some very big advantages and benefits. A lot of people associate all of the advances of Ai technology with losing jobs. What do you say to that? What it will require will require a different skill set in the factories because you know, all these machines, I mean they require serious upgrading of skills which we have a factory. So I would say the nature of the job changes. Um I don't think the fundamental workload actually, I would even argue some of the Ai will allow and make the so called restoring a lot more efficient. What do you see in the future? I mean how will Ai bring even more innovations down the road. I mean what are you imagining what's in the work? First of all I would say there's no one A I also like there's no one digital, you have multiple aspects of the company where it plays a critical role. I think we will see a more a lot more Ai and consumer facing side. You know, when we when we directly approach consumer so when we can approach susie and know what you bought last week and how we could help you going forward. So I think AI and data analytics together will help in particular consumer facing side. So we make the message is more relevant to the consumer. How is it attracting data scientists and AI experts to a company like world pool. Most people don't think of it as a big technology company. I think ultimately what allows us to attract people are the values for long term history of the company. Um and and frankly, you know, just what people, what we do is a product of a consumer home. You know, even if your data scientists, you like still products which your mom has at home because it's more tangible, it's more relevant. Um it's real it's not some B2B business. Um it's really matter. I think what allows us to attract people
