This year’s Fortune 500 marks the 68th running of the list.

Plains GP Holdings operates over 18,000 miles of pipeline and provides other energy infrastructure and logistics services for crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas in the U.S. and Canada. The company jumped 39 spots on the Fortune 500 list, driven largely by fast-rising oil prices and Plains GP’s ability to profit from the revival of oil and gas production in Texas’ Permian Basin.

The pipeline operator, based in Houston, Texas, is a master limited partnership focused on the transportation, processing, and storage of crude oil and natural gas liquids and related products throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Plains GP Holdings is the parent of Plains All American Pipeline (PAA), which provides infrastructure and logistics services for crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (like ethane and propane) in the U.S. and Canada. Revenues shrank by 1% last year, to $33.7 billion, and profits dipped by roughly the same rate. And the coronavirus-related shutdowns this year, which have clobbered demand for oil and gas, aren't making things easier for 2020. One immediate setback: A planned joint venture between Plains and Phillips 66 to create Red Oak Pipeline—intended to transport crude oil from Cushing, Oklahoma, and the Permian Basin to key markets along the Texas Gulf Coast—has been deferred, as economic activity has slowed across the board. To keep more cash in its coffers, PAA has reduced its capital spending program and cut distributions to shareholders by half. The company also plans to sell off a total of $440 million in assets this year.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

Plains GP Holdings is a ”midstream” energy company that stores, transports and processes natural gas and oil, connecting suppliers with distributors. Based in Houston, with a Canadian headquarters in Calgary, it operates pipelines, railcars and storage facilities for both crude oil and natural gas, as well as natural gas processing facilities. Many of its ownership interests are joint ventures with other companies.
