Incorporated in Ireland but headquartered in Shanghai, PDD is a potent e-commerce player, best known for its platforms Pinduoduo, which operates mostly in China, and Temu, which operates in the U.S. and several other countries. The company’s revenue is on pace to top $27 billion in 2023, a 46% increase over the previous year.

<span style="font-weight: 400">Pinduoduo, an online-grocery giant, recorded its first quarterly profit of $374 million (on $3.6 billion in sales) in the three months ended in June. In August the company pledged to invest it all—and more—into agriculture-related philanthropy, announcing a $1.5 billion fund to provide tech and business training to farmers, improve logistics infrastructure, and support agri-tech research and development. Pinduoduo expects that it will benefit from this generosity, since the funding will improve its supply chain and its relationship with farmers—12 million of whom sell their produce via the PDD app.</span>

<p class="p1">China’s e-commerce market is crowded with behemoths, but Pinduoduo has made inroads by chasing less sought-after consumers in China’s lower-profile cities and by adding social and gaming elements to the online shopping experience. A group-buying function, for instance, encourages customers to find friends to go in on bulk purchases. Pinduoduo’s sales boomed during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, but a development later in the year—Beijing’s proposed antitrust regulation that targets tech—represents an emerging threat.</p>
