For global companies, it can be difficult to follow all the fragmented privacy and security laws passed by federal and local governments around the world. Atlanta-based OneTrust develops software that helps businesses stay compliant with those rules—a capability that’s becoming increasingly important as companies implement generative AI features that pull data from different parts of the organization. With annual recurring revenue of <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-24/onetrust-raises-150-million-from-vcs-al-gore-s-firm?srnd=technology-vp&amp;sref=Dd2N48n2&amp;embedded-checkout=true">$400 million</a> and more than 14,000 customers, according to CEO Kabir Barday, OneTrust serves clients including Samsung, shipping company Maersk, and professional services firm Deloitte.

–OneTrust closed a $150 million funding round in July led by Generation Investment Management, the venture capital firm cofounded by former vice president Al Gore. The company says it has raised a total of $1 billion to date. 
–The company, which was valued at $4.5 billion in the latest funding round and counts more than 2,000 employees, is preparing for an initial public offering, the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-24/onetrust-raises-150-million-from-vcs-al-gore-s-firm">CEO told Bloomberg in July</a>, though he said there is no specific date set yet. 
–Founded in 2016, OneTrust hasn’t been immune to larger macroeconomic conditions. Last year, it <a href="https://www.onetrust.com/blog/onetrust-organizational-update/">laid off 950 employees</a>, or 25% of its workforce, due to a downturn in capital markets.
